Interest Rates at 2.25%: What It Means for Your Mortgage

On September 2, the Bank of Canada held its policy rate at 2.25%. The next decision is October 28, 2026.

Why the hold?

Inflation has hovered around 3%, pushed up mainly by gas prices. Without gasoline it was 2.2%, and core measures were close to 2%. The Bank flagged higher inflation risks and uncertainty from new US tariffs, and said it is ready to adjust as needed.

What it means for you

  • Variable-rate borrowers: Your payment stays steady for now.

  • Buyers: Rates are far below the 2023 peak. Combined with lower home prices and high inventory, affordability has improved. Get a rate hold with your pre-approval.

  • Renewing soon: Many owners who locked in five years ago at very low rates face a reset. Talk to your mortgage professional early and compare fixed and variable options.

Watch October 28

A cut, hold or hike will shape winter buying conditions. We'll post an update after the announcement.
